So if my side of the road has no stop sign or stoplight then does that mean I'm on the wrong side of a one way road or something?

Yes, if you are driving down the right side of a road and see no signs you need to move to the left side

So then my friend should have made a U-turn instead of turning left when the coast was clear lol.

So do not all one way roads properly label themselves as one way roads?

My friend is saying they didn't see a single "wrong way" or "oneway" sign.

The GPS was even telling them to go left in a 4 way intersection.

Despite the fact they had no lights or stop sign but the other 3 intersections had lights.

Also check and make sure your not in a third world country.

I've encountered intersections that are 3-way stops. They're odd but they do happen. I don't think I've ever seen one that had 3 lights and no signal at all on the other way though; that seems dangerous.
