Lego island figures were fully 3D, games like DOOM 64 still used 2d sprites.
They were also fully animated and posed in realistic lego poses.
Not only that but the faces were fully animated, their eyes moved. They blinked. Their eyebrows moved and mouthes moved. Games like tomb raider, her mouth never moved during cutscenes when she was speaking.
Lego Island also had realistic looking FMV sequences. I could actually believe it was real legos.
