university: commute or residency

commute (from current place) to uni ('bout an hour) or get a residency there (dorm / suite)

commuting slowly makes you develop suicidal tendencies, do not do it

everyone i know advises against it and plus its harder to make new friends

I'm lucky and live nearby my college, so I can just bike or rollerskate to get my exercise and still get there pretty early, but from the sounds of it, i'd just stick with getting a dorm in your case.
