Author Topic: when did roblox start looking better than blockland?  (Read 975 times)

one has the backing of a corporation worth $29.5 billion and the other was a relatively indie effort so it was kind of inevitable

quite some time ago, actually

What the forget are you talking about that looks like dog stuff

What the forget are you talking about that looks like dog stuff

yes, yes it is.

However if you look at all the scripting and animation capabilities that roblox game has it really shows blockland can't do any of that stuff

most of those things you can do in blockland, its just modders put waaaay less effort into making high quality stuff

for example, in bl theres some vehicles that are just like the default jeep, bland and fun without and fancy animations and stuff

but you CAN make stuff that looks amazing and uses torque to its full potential like: https://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=326915.0

its just up to the level of detail you want to go to. Unfortunately, Blockland has no way to monetize the mods, whereas Roblox dev literally get paid to make their servers (i know someone making 20k usd every week passively off a roblox server)

It looks like a Unity asset-flip game with garbage highly repetitive textures. Blockland has a consistent art style at least.

roblox recently added a whole new lighting system called "future is bright" that looks pretty good if used well. has reflections, materials are bumpmapped, etc - think blockland shadows and shaders except actually good. also combine this with the fact there are different materials to begin with, theres a terrain system that is becoming increasingly more detailed, etc. whereas bl is a standalone sort of game on the tribes 2 (2001) engine where your tools are just the bricks you can place and events/scripts (the latter being delivered via add-ons that you must manually install), roblox is more like a constantly updated game engine where you have a dedicated studio editor with many different tools and you can make individual "games" which are browsable through a web interface
source: currently making a roblox game. also see screenshots below of a game designed to show off said lighting features

roblox has evolved so much from what it was before that it now feels less like a game where you build little games with lego bricks and lego-like characters and more like a game engine in general where you can make realistic environments with any sort of characters and make money from it, plus like mr opioid and trogtor said, roblox is constantly being updated by a company that's worth millions/billions of dollars.

blockland is an indie game that keeps it's lego toy style consistent and it's creator has decided to stop giving it major updates for a long while.

We still get updates. But they remove features instead of add them.
