Game Rants (How to Make a Good Game)
<< < (4/8) > >>
Wedge:
Probably not, but it shouldn't discourage people from being able to intelligently discuss issues in games. Even if nothing comes of it, it's still a contribution. Maybe some independent developer (and it would need to be an independent developer- they've got nothing to lose deviating from the default formula for creating blockbuster games) would use the contents of such a rant to write a game that grows in popularity so much that major game developers begin to consider it. (and hey, take a look at the roots of Portal and Counter-Strike! Some game about cartoon characters popping in and out of colored holes to solve puzzles and mazes, and a mod for a quake based game that attempted to emulate the feel of classic shooters- having more in common with Space Invaders than Red Orchestra with it's stamina meters and fancy 'oh look at me i don't have a crosshair' gameplay- and tie in themed team based deathmatch in a balanced way that was meaningful, intuitive and fun for the player without being overly complicated)

In any case, I think you only stated reasons why you disagreed, no actual reasons for why his rant was bad (something along the lines of spelling, grammar and inconsistent logic may have been more appropriate), and, whether you intended it or not, made a brilliant post contributing to the discussion of why you like games. (in practice, you posted the same thing the author did, from a different point of view)

Oh wow, are you THAT handicapped?!  More people make games than you know, and guess what?  PEOPLE VOICE OPINIONS ON WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE!  First off, you cannot say an opinion sucks, also, do you really think I do not know that game companies do not read this?  I'm an intelligent person.  You could just say "I don't agree with this statement."  Also, for text mute, from the game, players are speaking in text, therefore mute works there, do you whine about the word in mute mods for Blockland?  NO!  Also, chat disappears from the non-menu chat if spammed, handicap.  I very well know about the Samus boobs thing, but that's just to make her more appealing for smash bros, no other females are like, ever shown.  Diversity means a mix of races, and that stuff, Only a select few games have female main characters.  Even fewer have black main characters, also, do you see a male main character with not much muscles in every game?  I didn't think so.  For the puzzle games comment, I was just saying an example, 3rd grader, note the "and such" part.  I think releasing yet another game where you shoot the hell out of another person, nothing else is starting to be a bore, and a risk.  Taking a risk is VERY good, also, you have access to the other players for ideas.  Ok, do you get it now?  Err, sorry I got so mad, it just pissed me.

Not really.
His guide (so to say) on how to make a good game isn't really valid, he stated something that doesn't apply to video games or their developers, not even small independent ones.
All of it was quite useless and was more of a common sense issue. If you aren't smart enough to include the feature of muting someone then quite frankly you shouldn't be making video games.

Did I hit a nerve?
You can never make a successful game by following your guide, because according to you it just an opinion. Yes, I have seen an endless amount of games where the main character isn't some bulky white male, stop making generalizations based off of one or two games that recently came out.
No, taking risks when trying to make a profit and a living are the worst and dumbest things you could ever do. Especially if you're an independent game developer and just blew over five thousand dollars following some idiots guide that doesn't even make sense.
Giving a female big boobs to make her appealing to some horny 5 year old child is exactly the opposite of diversity. "We are going to give her big boobs so males buy this game" is the same as "We are going to make the main character white because the % of white people who own video game consoles or a good computer > % of black people who own video game consoles or a good computer".

Marcem:
Wow, yet you agree with Yahtsee?  EDIT: I'm not saying that I LOVE to see huge boobs in games!  You are loving handicapped.
Vertzer:
No, I find the avatar rather amusing.
There you go again with your assumptions and generalizations.
