There are always cases of couples lasting since high school and getting married and such but as the dominating majority of cases show, they mean little and never last.

From what I gather, the boyfriend/girlfriend is more an object, a trophy, than a person to have meaningful conversations with. They desire having someone to call their own because thats the "cool" thing to have. It merely adds more stress and more drama to everyday life.

The only thing its good for is for lulz.

That makes no sense unless his birth parents got a divorce at some point.
