do you use a laptop or desktop pc?
if its a laptop you will need a dsl cable
and if its a pc you will need a dsl cable as well [usually a blue cable going from
your pc to your router]

You don't need a cable. You can use wireless.

Its also quite possible that you did not forward your ports correctly.
