I only draw things based on real things like a portrate (or thats all I'm good at at least) In fifth grade I drew everybody's shoes and in seventh grade I drew this one kid in Reading and Research every day killing himself in different ways :D We were sorta friends lol

The more expensive equipment you have, the better an artist you are.

Here are some recommendations:

Holy stuff! $15 for a pencil? $100 for a sketchbook? Over a $1 per page?  :O

I wouldn't want to write in it for fear of wasting it.

Cartoony or realistic?

Realistic.

thanks guys, you've given my something to try.

i draw pretty well when i draw i use a sharp pencil to make thin lines i traces first with easily erasable lines and after im finished making a tracing i add some details[such as necklace's swords ect.] then i erase the unneeded or nasty looking likes then i draw over the trace lines in dark and im finished :D

either get a really good pencil or a pen. If you use a stuffty pencil, the picture itself is going to come out stuffty. I like pens for sketching and drawing just because the picture comes out stronger, in my opinion.

But GOOD pencils are great for shading, so to each his own.
