Pro-loving-tip: Never. Ever. Try to use a 512x512 texture divided into 3x3 grid. (170x170 * 3 in three rows with 1 extra pixel at all edges) Sure you lose 12,516 pixels worth of detail but it is not loving worth it. That 1 empty pixel border around the grid will come bite you in the ass, maul your soul and burn your body later. I spent two loving days screwing around with this handicapped setup and trying to make the god damned texture UV mapped properly. It is impossible. I went back to the good old cross shaped texture (128x128 squares) and guess loving what? Perfect loving mapping right off the loving bat. No need to rotate UV's. No need to scale UV's by 0.99 etc. Everything just works. End of rage.
I am sorry, oh mighty gods of subdivision, for I have strayed from the path of the glorious number 2. May the multiples of 2 never be forgotten.
