Having some issues coloring it, blender keeps making the entire model colored not selected parts any help?

Did you join everything together? If you did, you have to select the peice you want to color, then go to the edit tab, and where the materials selection is, you hit the drop-(up?) box and hit either new material or an existing material. You can also hit assign if you have a color selected through the left/right selections for materials.
