Practicing run cycles
They whole thing should bob up and down slightly. Generally the slower the run, the more noticeable the bob can be. If it's a very fast run, with the legs moving very quickly, then you want less bob, or else the whole thing will be confusing to look at.
That's a good start though.
EDIT: also, speaking of animations: is there a good gif generator program out there that's free? If I can get my hands on one then I'll see about posting some of my animations.
