anyway to fix that? I also have a backup version which still has the pickaxe. but I dont want to use that since I would loose my automatic cobble/smooth stone generator. and my tunnels and such.

did it have any damage? if not then spawn in a new one and use the /enchant command

it had damage like 100 something hp gone. and I have cheats off. is it possible I can load the backup in MCEdit and copy the pickaxe in to the current version of the world?

or go to your old world, put the pickaxe in your inventory, quit the game and just copy player.dat from your backup world and place it in the latest save file
