I suppose Vanilla would be fun with friends. It's funny, because with mods, it's the complete opposite. Even if you're all close friends, everyone goes off and does their own thing with their favorite mod, which completely defeats the purpose of playing together.

My cousins, friends, and I all are generally in the same home in my FTB server.

Weird. When I played FTB back then, I was the one making automated animal farms, someone else was off working on a quarry, and the third guy was just exploring in caves. Perhaps my group didn't have that "togetherness".

I did the same except we still had our own home, we just had one explorer, builder/farm person, and miner, was fun.
