I'm pretty sure that Mojang specifically said that Minecraft will lose compatibility with older versions of java as the updates go.

What?
1.6 now allows for multiple files of minecraft.jar as different names, you can switch which boots with the new profile feature of the launcher.
That means to make mods now, you just copy the minecraft.jar and make the changes you need.
