we know,
people have been watching too much sci-fi if they think the world will end because of that stupid calendar.

--- Quote from: makanix163 on June 01, 2009, 10:07:38 PM ---I think the Chinese will end the world: Fact- if every person in china stood on a chair and jumped off at the same time, it could knock earth out of it's orbit!

And that is how everyone will die... By slowly floating farther into space until we hit something, or die from the cold because we are too far away from the sun. Well that is the scientific veiw... Sort of...

--- End quote ---

WRONG. I love science ;D, Assuming a population of 1.2 billion Chinese weighting an average fo 150 poungs (68 Kilograms) each their collective jump would strike the earth with 1.6 trillion joules. That is the force of a earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. Earthquakes of that magitude have been happening for a very long time. This planet continues circling the sun with a force called momentum.

Even if EVERYONE jumped at the same time the force would be irrelevant. If 1,000 billion people jumped in china, and 1,000 billion jumped in U.S.A, the force would meet in the center of the earth, cuasing nothing other never thousands of nasty earthquakes.

But then it wouldn't matter, with THAT many people I would want to be dead anyhow.

The world won't end 2012, the sanity of human's will however.
Metal Axe On Fire:
Real or myth?

What the heck are you talking about...?

--- Quote ---In the context of this tradition then, the Winter Solstice on December 21 was celebrated as the Sun’s birthday. It is the longest night of the year and therefore the shortest day of the year. It represented the ultimate power of the dark forces of Nature: the long winter night when things appeared to be dead and still. And out of the depths of this longest night the new Sun was born. From this point on, the power of the light grows in strength and the days slowly begin to grow longer

The auspicious year of 2012 indicated in the long count calendar illuminates the fact that the Precessional movement of the Winter Solstice Sun will gradually bring its position into alignment with the very center of our Galaxy. For the Maya, this is like the last stroke of Midnight on New Year’s Eve, only in 2012 the New Year is the New Galactic Year of 26,000 solar years. The Galactic Clock will be at zero point and a New Precessional Cycle will begin.
--- End quote ---

These are (more or less) facts... All of the rumors and speculation come from what will happen because of this. All of you who have mentioned (or posted that comic) about the Mayan calendar ending because they "had to stop somewhere" are misinformed idiots. As quoted above the date marks the end of the Galatic year because the alignment will be back to it's starting position.

People who say the Mayan calendar marks the end of life are just making assumptions/guesses. Something could happen, but I doubt it.
