he just did some dumbass move that compromised his computer, and that move was most likely unrelated to steam

They can get through firewall if they really wanted to. I don't try to use it as it's pointless in that it hinders a lot of online playability. If someone wants my vacation photos that much, they can have them. I never keep anything important on my pc for too long. I back things up every month or two and archive it on DVDR. Saves me a lot of time should I ever need to reformat.
