I'm going to say that somewhere behind the scenes Robot Chicken's lawyers and Lucas Arts' Lawyers get together and talk about something.

Again it's not that easy. Sure we could contact Lucas' legal team directly, but something tells me they won't really reply to a letter from two teenage boys making a movie with a video game.

I'm going to stick with the basic rules of copying. I'm not making any money, it's shareware, you (Lucas) lose nothing. In fact, he gains popularity for Star Wars.

We're ripping off a movie, and not changing names. Only because of comical effect, but still, if we even did anything remotely close to a transaction of legal tender using Lucas' property, I would not feel good about it what so ever. Even if it were legal, it feels wrong to steal ideas. I guess as a creator myself, I understand the need for copyrights.

No thank you, but it was nice of you to try and help.

Its legal because its a parody.  Look at Weird Al.  Even though he asks before he does a song, he technically doesn't have to.  (Fair Use)

Weird Al is different. Weird Al writes his own lyrics to other people's songs.

We are literally taking the names LUKE SKYWALKER and DARTH VADER and HAN SOLO and using them in our own production. Maybe Lucas does have a copy right on them, maybe he doesn't. I don't want to take the chance of going to court with 20'th Century Fox's lawyers.

Sure we could change the names like we did everything else, but that just wouldn't be as fun. To me it wouldn't be the kind of parody I was going for. Though I think naming Han: Ham Salad would just make me giggle.
