Everything there is incorrect.
It may have been inspired by WW1, but it was never used in it. It became popular in the 1920's as a street enforcing weapon, most notably known as the Chicago Typewriter. It was useful because it pumped out a high number of rounds in a small amount of time with decent accuracy (not that any was needed). It became popular as a US light infantry weapon during WW2, which is a much different model, and used a box magazine. The M1928 used the drum magazine, while the M1A1 was used in WW2. Vast difference. Furthermore the Mafia is a huge cliche. That is all.
