So does Photoshop, which is what I used. I still couldn't see the pixels, though. :c

I cut the image out of the original one, opened up a new file of the same size with the background colour 'transparent' under advanced options.  Then I just used the eraser, progressively going to smaller sizes and smoothing it out until it blends seamlessly into the transparency.

You can just right click and add alpha channel then when you erase it'll make it transparent (IN GIMP). And I think you can just add a layer behind it that's a different color, then delete it when you get rid of all the pixels.
