I want to know why everyone thinks of pirates when they hear cutlass, it was used more in the cival war by u.s. cavalry officers more than by pirates, which is why the handle is curved, to protect the officers hand from getting hurt by another blade and so on.

I actually thought it was used my by Navy officers then pirates.
