<Waits for Badspot to post about his dad shovels coal and he's a professional computer programmer>
I thought this was the same thread. Could be the same poster as well

I can't find the post where Badspot says:
"Then your dad must mine coal for a living because I am a god damn professional computer programmer and I know it's safe"

Quote from: Badspot
I don't know how to say this without being rude, so I'm just going to be rude.  Your dad shovels coal for a living and I am a goddamn professional computer programmer.  I know more about this subject than your dad.  Port forwarding, if done correctly, is completely safe.

I couldn't find it because I didn't realize he used "goddamn" as one word.

Doesn't it say somewhere "Don't ask your parents, do it yourself", or something of the sort?

Ah you beat me to it. :(

Really, it was VERY easy, plus I had to PF when I started using Bittorent.

Kids; Don't ask for your parents help, just do it when they're not home.

Yeah even somehow my dad thought it opened your computer to viruses and stuff. I managed to get him to google it and he believed me.

Your dad is clearly making his decision because of some stupid stuff he heard.  I doubt there are any actual facts about it used in his reasoning.  It is most likely an ignorant decision because he has no loving clue what he's talking about.

No, his dad is just loving handicapped like every other parent and goes "AFDAFSDF VIRUSES!!!!!" because they're agan, loving handicapped.

I can't imagine how many emails Badspot gets from angry parents saying "How can you encourage our children to forward our ports and open our computers to viruses.

Show your dad this.

"Ports" are just like doors. People have to open doors to walk through them, right? Same with routers and some programs, like Blockland. It needs to walk through the door to get to other places. Opening that door for Blockland or other programs is called "port forwarding."

Routers don't have anything to do with your computer, they just forward the Internet to your computer. A router can not receive a virus, therefore the virus cannot be transferred to a computer.

There are always tons of ports on your router forwarded by default internally, and your computer still isn't getting plugged with viruses, right? And the people running hundreds of these Blockland servers forwarded and aren't getting viruses through this, right? So, there you have it.

Viruses aren't even sent through ports. Viruses are sent through Internet scripts, webpage downloads, and some files available for download. Blockland, the ports it requires, and your router don't have anything to do with them.

Of course, my router won't even let me forward ports to a static IP, so I can't do it. Don't ever buy a Gigaset router. They suck richard.

Sources? I've been working with computers since I was 3. Ask me nearly anything.

If you need to consult further, contact Badspot. He's the sole creator of Blockland and he knows more about this stuff than any of us.
