The grate brick is as you might find in a lego set, it is an 8x8 grill.

It wouldn't make sense to have a 1x1 grill because it doesn't have a top or a bottom and therefore can't be placed.

I was thinking a 2x2 grill, that was just the diamond shaped part. That way they could interconnect
