Dually earned. He decided to smart off instead of explaining the situation to father in the first place. He didn't even need to hit his sister. Just inform the dad that the family wii shouldn't be put in a single kid's room or obvious arguments over it are going to ensue and that sister is being a bit selfish for her behavior and thinks that throwing things at him was a wrong way to deal with their anger. But nope, instead of immediately removing himself from the problem, he complicated it and hit his sister which gave her the leverage she knew she could take advantage of.
tl;dr Let her throw stuff at you, especially as you're leaving her room, show evidence of her tantrum to father, watch her get beat. Then you can call father a hypocrite for hitting a girl.
