The hell is up with this stupid anti-virus ad?

I'm looking around on these forums I go to an all of a sudden out of no where comes up a box saying I need to download this anti-virus program because I'm infected. So I close the box off and it changes the page to a fake page, and it shows "My Computer" in XP but I have Vista, and it says my computer is getting infected. I keep closing the ad and when I go back to the forums I go to it keeps popping up.
Is there anyway to make this annoying ad stop?

Well which is a good one? Last time I used Avast! and the pop-up still came.

It's adware. It means you already have malicious software on your computer. You should run a scan.
