The only time I've called someone a noob is if they are indeed one and accusing someone else of being one.  I can't say I use it as an insult outside of that.  I must agree; the word noob is idiotic, barbaric, and just plain fugly.

Agreed. It's not a word, why try and feign it?
Newb isn't either, but it's quicker than "new guy."
Although more likely to be taken offensively.
