It should time out at "Verifying RTB Add-Ons" and continue loading as usual if this was the case. What actually happened?

The code is modifiable. I'm sure when this kind of scheme is implemented, modders will still have a way to hide/or remove these things.

I presume he meant on our website which gets a lot of traffic. It'd be relatively easy to implement a solution in-game too which would still be reasonably tamper-proof to people changing the code.

Meanwhile, we don't know anything about his secret ways of advertizing stuff which generates more then enough money...
All the add-ons that are based on other games are all part of his plan which secretly advertise other games.
