Using plugins that export your current song data to an XML file (there's a shareware one for Windows Media Player and I'm pretty sure some free ones for Winamp floating around; no idea about iTunes) and fairly regular file checks (~once every ten seconds) we could assumedly update that status data, if we were given say 255 characters tops to play with.

But from what I've read there'll basically just be the preset statuses, not an MSN-style 'personal message'.

Thinking about it, perhaps it should tell you specifically what they are doing ("In-Game: Loading and Idle" "In-Game and Available" "Available on Menu" etc)

http://forum.blockland.us/index.php?topic=98973.0 <-- I actually meant that. And things like it. Add-On's that can change your status for you if you let it.

Would be cool to interact with real music players, although I usually use Zoom Player, but just a idea.

There isn't a lot of horizontal space for long statuses so they're currently limited to "Hosting" and "Playing".

Hmm. Custom Status might still be... well, required later on. I say required because I'm sure there's more than a few people around used to it for such in depth messaging applications, and they'd likely want that ability. A text limit would of course be required, but perhaps in later versions.

You could make it display on just the info card and chat, or a tooltip shown beside their name or something when you mouse over it.
