If you reset it, doesn't something on the router get lost? I've accidentally done something like that once.

I think he means a normal reset, not a complete reset.
A complete reset would clear all your router settings, and that is done by holding the small button in for 10 seconds.
A normal reset resets the connections, and is done by unplugging it for 10 seconds.
