You can affect something. However it is an effect of the recent earthquake that the building fell down.

It makes me cringe that people always get that contraction wrong.

Good try, but I think a better explanation would be "Then is used to show a passage of time. I.e. 'I ate a taco, then danced with a monkey.'" "Than is used to compare two things. I.e. 'Dancing with the monkey was more fulfilling than eating the taco'".
