The same with then and than. E makes is a noun. A makes it the other thing.

Good try, but I think a better explanation would be "Then is used to show a passage of time. I.e. 'I ate a taco, then danced with a monkey.'" "Than is used to compare two things. I.e. 'Dancing with the monkey was more fulfilling than eating the taco'".
