Try to get the idea of how small an atom is, then that everything is made out of lifeless atoms. Even life is made out of atoms. We're built of Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and various other elements. It's really hard to comprehend how everything 'just works' at that level. There is no further complexity, that's as small as it gets. Atoms don't think, they just do, but they build us, and we think. Now, think about splitting a piece of wood, or chalk. Now realize that it fragments. You can keep breaking it until it's just dust, but even then it's still connected at some level. Now, think of an atom, more specifically a proton. There is nothing smaller than protons and neutrons.
