The age of consent is a general age that they hope you are mature enough to make mature decisions regarding relationships and loveuality. A mass amount of people are not mature enough and a large part of them never will be. These are people who find themselves in abusive relationships (or are abusive in theirs), create unwanted pregnancies, and spread STDs.
