Story writing, anyone?

My sister showed me this thing she found out about from some of her friends called Nanowrimo. It's a National Novel Writing thing, where you write a novel in a month if possiable. I've been thinking about trying to write/enter a story, but I don't really have anything to base it around. As in, I need a topic. I've been thinking zombies, but I'm not sure.
Any ideas?

Actually, this isn't a bad idea, but I want my first one to this to be serious. Next one, semi-serious or not serious period. You get a plaque if you win c:

If you want a serious subject, then Zombies are not a good idea. People make millions off of Fictional character's diary stories. Just think of some problem you had in life, exaggerate it a bit and cash in the profit.
