I was hoping for a simple explanation of why the RAM made it worse. Bisjac did that, sort of.

Maybe..
Your drivers are out of date.
Your router got messed up.
You had some stuff running on the background, if so, check your task manager.
Try reverting back to your old RAM card and see if it still lags out.
