Why are avatars automatically edited to say ban?

Often, when a user is banned, his avatar auto changes to say ban. Does Baddy waste time doing this, or is it a magical SMF thing?

They aren't changed..?

Sometimes they are. Superblock's avatar was. Jirue's was.
