Also, 50 years before breaking the sound barrier, humans were still floating around the air in balloons. |

Which is why I stated 50+ years which doesn't set it at exactly 50 years ago. It can be more. In any case, people said it was impossible to fly. They said that the Titanic was impossible to sink. They said it was impossible to fit a whole computer into one room. They said a lot of things were impossible that we do every day and take for granted. The speed of light is only the next step.
