Avatar changes?

I noticed you can't just copy and paste the IMG or HTML code for an avatar? Now you need to upload one? I have selected an avatar off of photobucket.com, I click on download, and it saves as a picture, but its a .gif...

How do you download a .gif format without it being saved as a .jpg?
