I restarted, that seemed to fix it.

The message on IRC comes up if you crash/freeze ingame. It doesn't disconnect until the connection times out.
So, if you restart BEFORE the irc has logged you off, you can't reconnect with the same name until it has logged it off
Simple solution - Don't use Blockhead[number] as your IRC name... type a newname is bottom custom bit and dc and rc
