Map + Water

I absolutely failed when making my first map (Death Valley - Locked now) and decided to make a way better, more efforted map BUT

I use flatlands, and need water.
The water brick, placing easy, resizing a doddle but why do i enter the water and fall through under the water as if it isn't there.
I'm guessing it's something to do with the dimensions of the water block but I need clarification and/or a good set of dimensions.
