Off Topic / OL-RPG Engine Project (r1)
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:22:09 AM »

Recently, I've been spending a lot more time on a project of mine. I'll be presenting it to a group of people that are presenting to me an award for excellence in going "Above and Beyond" in the Technology category for my school.

I wouldn't mind if a few people from here would test it out for me, iron any bugs out of it, and perhaps even give me suggestions for it. I plan on doing a lot more work with it, and if my artist Shamwava would ever start working again (he broke his computer trying to install Blender and Unity, hah) I could produce a more.. aesthetic product.

Required: (If you don't have any of these, or are not sure, it is advised you get the Full Download.)
  • Windows OS; XP or newer.
  • DirectX 9.0c or higher
  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile (x86 or x64)
  • Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0

Download Links (r1); (If you can run Terraria, you should be able to run this.)
  • Full Download: Here (Automatic setup, pulls required files if needed, installs to computer. Run via setup.exe)
  • Update/Small Download: Here (Only core files, no installation.)

I'll try to keep this post updated, but you'll most likely be able to find it first on my personal forums over on my website. That's where I'll be keeping the update logs for this project. If you come across a crash or a bug, try to recreate it a second time and find the steps to causing it, that would be the most helpful for me fixing it.

Hopefully this project won't end up like Tweed did, I have much more experience now though. =P

10:35 PM - MegaScience: Aeris, were you banned from the Blockland forums?
10:35 PM - DJ BreadWinner: nope
10:35 PM - MegaScience: Oh well, Badspot lifted all bans not done since the serial requirements
10:35 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Cool
10:35 PM - MegaScience: So people who were banned like that can come back, such as Iban
10:35 PM - DJ BreadWinner: I saw.
10:35 PM - MegaScience: o_o You still check?
10:36 PM - DJ BreadWinner: i see all.
10:36 PM - MegaScience: Did you see Iban posting pictures of himself being cute?
10:36 PM - DJ BreadWinner: I see most.
10:37 PM - MegaScience: And what about that image of the edited Minecraft Ending I did where it calls you out for cheating
10:37 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Nope.
10:38 PM - DJ BreadWinner: I don't keep track of small stuff.
10:39 PM - MegaScience: :( That wasn't very nice.
10:40 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Life's not nice. Besides, why would Iban imatating Stocking matter to me?
10:41 PM - MegaScience: Well, you knew about other things. I was just curious if you knew that part...
10:42 PM - DJ BreadWinner: I know quite a bit. None of it matters though, bl is pathetic.
10:43 PM - MegaScience: o.o
10:43 PM - MegaScience: You're scaring me. ;~;
10:44 PM - DJ BreadWinner: I don't know why anyone would wate their time on a stuffty forum such as that.
10:45 PM - MegaScience: Because we all multitask and if you ask a question, there's a 80% chance they can help you with whatever it is o.o
10:45 PM - MegaScience: an*
10:45 PM - DJ BreadWinner: As if. The forum is a stuff hole for mentally disabled friends.
10:46 PM - MegaScience: :( Well I was just... How's life been?
10:47 PM - DJ BreadWinner: What do you want Mega?
10:49 PM - MegaScience: I just wanted to tell you something, I didn't expect you to be so unhappy with it, but the negativity is scary me, so I want to defuse that now :(
10:49 PM - DJ BreadWinner: You wanted to show me that Iban did what like 40 people did to me when I posted pics?
10:49 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Nice.
10:50 PM - MegaScience: I wanted to ask if you were banned the old way, because then you'd be able to come back. I didn't know you thought that negatively about this place, though. I'm sorry.
10:51 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Kind of hard to not think of it negatively.
10:51 PM - MegaScience sighs
10:51 PM - MegaScience: I am sorry.
MegaScience is now Offline.
MegaScience is now Online.
10:57 PM - DJ BreadWinner: 10:52 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Tempted to just throw it in his face lol

10:52 PM - Orthone: Lol
10:54 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Betcha they would flip stuff to hear this, think I'm just gonna copy paste this into his chat.
10:57 PM - DJ BreadWinner: Also, you act like a loving serial rapist.
10:58 PM - MegaScience raises his eyebrow
10:58 PM - MegaScience: So I go to tell you you could return to the board if you were IP banned
10:58 PM - MegaScience: which I asked others, like FaTDoG
10:58 PM - MegaScience: You say you knew, I passively list other stuff
10:59 PM - MegaScience: You talk in intense, scary negativity
10:59 PM - MegaScience: Like I did something terrible :| And I apologize for mentioning Iban and all
10:59 PM - MegaScience: And then you say I was acting like a rapist?

11:10 PM - MegaScience: But that negativity was scary :|
11:10 PM - DJ BreadWinner: D'oh

Skinny as hell now. :c

Three weeks ago, he escaped and we couldn't find him. Yesterday we say him under a neighbors car and got him. We talked with the neighbor, and he had tore up the insulation under his house to get to my cat. It was a newly built house, and our best guess is he was down there when the bottom was patched up. The neighbor watered their lawn each day, so he was probably able to drink whatever seeped under the house for water, and he had a decent amount of fat on him.

Three weeks without good food, but now he's back. =)

Gallery / Damage Per Second Calculation [Events]
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:50:07 AM »
I was working for Cciamlazy today, and I wanted to figure out which weapons were better than others, so I set up a test to calculate the 'DPS' of the weapon. For accurate results, I have it set at a 20 second capture time, and these events won't work on weapons that do more than 100 damage per hit, or send the bot flying.

Events go on a vehicle spawn, and it needs to have a Standard Bot spawned on top of it.

Video: Here

Required Events:
1) Variable and Conditional Events
2) Bot Events
3) SetEventTimeout

Gallery / Medieval Buildings
« on: July 31, 2011, 09:15:31 PM »
First off, I would like to say that I normally don't build, I suck at building and I really only ever event. I was bored in Cciamlazy's server, who I'm going to event for when the Medieval build is more finished, and he asked the players to build some houses. I had nothing better to do, so I tried my hand at building seriously for the first time since I applied for the Outdoors Clan, a long, LONG time ago.

My first attempt, I wanted to make something a little less.. overdone.

Second build, wanted to build a more symbolic building. =P
Chimney is at the back of the house.

Neither of these houses have interiors, and I don't REALLY plan on making any. Go ahead and rate it if you'd like. Constructive criticism is accepted, though I may not listen to it because I rarely ever build. =P

Off Topic / Career Plans
« on: June 30, 2011, 02:25:44 AM »
I'm not sure how many people know me very well here.. I've been around for a few years, but I don't often post. I still haven't hit 2000 posts in almost 3 years now.

Anyway, I would like to talk about Career Plans. Yes, just like the ones you talked about with your teachers when you were 6. "What do YOU want to be when you grow up?" From an early age, I've always been attracted to electronics, and not romantically. I got my first computer what I was ~7 years old, and I was free to do absolutely anything that I wanted on it. Unrestricted internet access, and I was on whenever I had any free time.

One of the first game sites I followed was called BYOND, or "Build Your Own Net Dream". A nice community with a lot of gifted programmers, artists, and an overall friendly and helping community. I joined many games, and I decided I wanted to make my own. In BYOND, game production is set into 4 primary sections. Programming, 2D Sprites, Musics and Sounds, and then optionally having a Host that has a copy of your server up for other people to play. I didn't really like drawing, I had no way to compose any musics or sounds, and I had absolutely no clue how to host any of the variety of servers. (Remember, I'm about 7 or 8 by this time..) Naturally, I tried to fit myself into the last open category, Programming.

I didn't get very far, and I believe the most I ever got finished on my own was a horribly made island in which you could choose two characters to go between them. Link from LOZ and another character that I forget. I was enjoyed by typing simple phrases to make a world come alive. I had steady progress with the engine, and I eventually just gave up because I couldn't comprehend what I was actually doing. Jumping ahead into the near past, I decided to try my hand at creating a game, and I got decently far creating an Engine for which my game was based on. Some of you might know of it, Tweed .

On my path to reach my career goal of becoming a Programmer, I found a somewhat friendly community called the Blockland Forums. (That's you!) I learned how the game actually works, acquainted myself with the users of the forum, and decided I would try to stand out a little and develop some Add-ons that may benefit the community. My first was Fixer Gui, it was a simple GUI that was created to help fix a few problems the game had in that version. One of these problems was odd textures extending out from places they shouldn't have been. My second, was an actual script this time that had a nice little function, the Avatar Locker. Gaining a thousand downloads, this handy little Add-on would let you type in a simple command to prevent players on your server from changing their avatars, letting you force an appearance onto them.

I never really could get any ideas on what to make with the Add-on system, because I felt it didn't allow me the instant progress that I felt I required. When events were first introduced, I quickly learnt the flow of the system. Becoming quite adept at it, I started working on an NPC system for Hectic, where I carefully planned how it was going to work. Lastly, I created a topic to create a few VCE systems that users might not know how to make. I called it, The Eventing Help and Dump.

Present Time:
I'm currently following along in a very long series of videos created by a group of people that have classes on a lot of different subjects. I'm following the Unity and C#/XNA videos. I've currently progressed through making 3 'games', because it's a game development course, and am continuing at a steady rate due to it being summer and me having nothing better to do than watch 16 hours of videos that I follow along with.

For anybody who is curious about the games I've made, minus the first one because essentially cleared out the map code (lol).

Game Name- Date Posted- OS- Download
Bouncing 'Ball'- Wednesday, June 29, 2011- Windows (.NET Framework)- DL Here
Cannon I- Wednesday, June 29, 2011- Windows (.NET Framework)- DL Here

Bouncing Ball Description: A simple game that runs in a window. The 'Ball' bounces around, and you can toggle gravity by clicking it. Resizing the window affects the room in which the 'Ball' bounces in. Making the window smaller than the 'Ball' squishes, and kills it. You can 'feed' it, and see how many times you've fed it in the top left.

Cannon I: The first in a 3 part tutorial. A generic shooter in which a Target comes from the top of the screen, and shoots down randomly. Your lives are counted for in the top.

Note: All of the games listed above are part of me following along, don't expect them to be good. I'm planning on starting my own small project from scratch after I have followed all of the C# tutorials and have a solid understanding of the language.

TL;DR: MY CAREER PATH IS PROGRAMMER AND I AM PROGRESSING, WHAT IS YOURS?

A good friend of mine has been working with making some music, Electronic/Techno currently, and he asked me if I could find him some people to give him criticism of his work. Go ahead and leave some criticism either here, or on his PureVolume page..

http://www.purevolume.com/Qu357ion

Keep in mind that the two songs he has up there currently are only WIP, and they'll most likely change as time goes on. He says those two songs, when finished, will be free to download. Newer songs, if people like his style, will be up to buy at a low price.

So I've been working on my website for the past few days, it's a website that will have all of the information on all of the games I will be creating, along with other things that may be suggested to me.

You can get to my website via 3 different links; http://ortholabs.co.cc/ , http://orthonelabs.co.cc/ , or http://tweedgame.co.cc/ .

I would like feedback on the website, because I'm hoping to make it user friendly.. Even if the HTML, CSS, and Javascript behind it isn't exactly.. user friendly.. Haha.

Everything was hand-coded from scratch by me, the banner and graphic below that is made by Shamwava, my RL friend who is the artist for all of my games.

Rate X/10, and leave suggestions on what I can change if it's below a 10. If it IS a 10, tell me what you liked best. Thank you.

So a few days ago my dad asked me if I wanted to have a Mac PowerBook G4 laptop, I said sure because I had wanted to use it to take to school to be able to work on my game, Tweed. I instantly un-installed the Mac OS and installed Ubuntu 10.10 PPC. (PowerPC, the type of hardware makes it need special software. =/ ) Does anybody know how I would be able to emulate Win98 or better on this piece of stuff laptop? I've been doing a lot of research, but I keep coming up with nothing that helps.

Also, anybody who wants to say "OLOLOL MAC, DATS UR PROBLEEM!!!1", forget off, I got it for free. I would have chosen a newer non-PPC laptop if I had the choice.

I figured I would give the forums a shot at it before I destroy it out of rage.

Backstory
Back in late 2003, I, Orthone, started playing BYOND. I had tried my hand at scripting, but due to being young, couldn't learn how to script very well. I failed miserably. I looked back at the program after seeing some videos about a BYOND game called 'NEStalgia'. I had the thought to try my hand at scripting again, and asked one of my friends if he wanted to try to design some 2D art for me. He goes ahead and accepts, and I later find out that he actually wants to be designing for games as a future career. He started getting used to the program, and is now developing decent-quality icons as seen in some screenshots under his portfolio below. The whole reason I'm posting this here, is because I'm up for suggestions on what to improve on, and would like to find a community of players who would be willing to beat up my poor, innocent game untill it is tough enough to stand up to the, mostly flawless, Indie games. Another reason, is that I find enjoyment out of scripting, and watching people enjoy things that I have created.

Storyline
None yet, I actually haven't planned this part out. I've been more focused on teaching Sham how to use the program, and de-rusting my scripting ability. I haven't done it in a while.

Classes
Saber - Up close, short swords, decent health, high defense and attack.
Lancer - Super fast, 2 square attacks.
Berserker - Super high everything, except speed.
Archer - Detect invisible, long range.
Caster - Magic, healing.
*Rider - Summon creatures to aid in battle.
*Assassin - Stealth, backstab, small-range teleports.

*Most likely going to be a bought bonus class. One time payment of about $5-10 USD for a package of small benefits.

Planned
-No compiled list of planned systems.

Trivia
-'Bug' was the first mob, his icon is a gray player, initially used for drawing clothing onto the body for the player icon. Won't appear in any testing, other than between me and Sham.
-Orthone has jokingly fired Shamwava 16 times since beginning this project, due to Shamwava being a slacker. (Updated: 04/13/11)

General Discussion / Effort, how much do you use?
« on: February 25, 2011, 05:45:22 AM »
One of the things I've noticed doing is that, whenever I'm eventing (because that's most of all I do..), I put effort into it based on how good the build around me is. I suck at creative, nice looking building so most of the time I don't get very far.

I have fun making well-evented RPGs, and I found a file while looking through some old folders that I remember quite well. I made this file while working on an NPC for Hectic's RPG. Remember, this is fairly old. I worked in a few stages, design, core structure, and then I would start layering in the fancy design.

I started with a Microsoft Excel document, the old file above, to design how this NPC would function. Below is the file.

The video Here shows where I was transitioning between the core and fancy stages of the above format before deciding to scrap all of it to design it a little nicer to make the overall product much nicer.
