Steam Friends

I can't get Steam Friends anymore. I don't know why, seeing as I got Portal for free, and yes when I first got it I could add new friends. But now it says I require a game when I have Portal obviously waiting in my library. Could it be that I'm not playing it, so it's not detecting it?

I thought that when you get free portal they don't include all the extras. So you'd still have to buy a game, not get a free one.

I downloaded the Nvidia one and I was able to add friends after that.
