Borderlands: Mad Mel bossfight

I just got Borderlands and I am currently level 20 and everything was going fine.

I just can't defeat Mad Mel. I get there with a RL mounted car, but there come two badguy cars that always destroy me.
I don't know why it is so hard, or what weapons should I use, or how am I supposed to defeat Mad Mel and other horde
of badguy cars without dying.

I want to get into New Haven :C

Kill the scout car things first, then concentrate on Mel. I usually fight the little cars without a vehicle.

First time I did this Ryuu went afk and I killed him by myself.
Also you do know you can lock on, right?
