I dont think you realise how unimportant armor is..

sure its important but you get to learn to hunt in groups and ambush.

not to mention items arent rare like in most games. making armor is easy.
you dont kill mobs or npcs for armor and weapons, you do it for reagants and materials to make armor.
i had about 20 bags of armor myself.
