If you haven't tried the Blender 3D: Noob to Pro book, I'd suggest reading it here.
I personally have found Blender to be a pain with the interface and overall controls, so I don't use it. I read http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Blender-Guide-Creation-Source/dp/1593271662/ref=pd_sim_b_10

I myself have used Milkshape 3D and found it to be the most easy to use.
I have also recently picked up Wings3D and have loved it just as much. It is a free program that has more advanced features then Milkshape, but not the headache of Blender (at least for me). :O
