Author Topic: Windows 7 on an external HDD  (Read 593 times)

Wondering if anyone else has tried this.

I'm trying it right now with a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 from school. Sadly after the windows loading screen I get BSoD. :(

wait,so what is on the internal drives then?

Whatever OS is currently on the system?

He is trying to load W7 on a computer with an external harddrive.

Huh. Interesting. Never thought of trying that. I don't see why it wouldn't work unless Windows 7 is detecting it as a device rather than a primary disk drive.

And people said it couldn't be done. :D

... It's not happening anyway though. I still get BSoD and as far as I can tell, it's not going to load any time soon.

Is it a clean drive? Did you install Windows 7 onto it recently or did you already have it on there? I know Windows doesn't like new hardware and that may be the case. If you didn't recently install Windows on the drive try re-installing it.

Here's the problem. It was installed on some other PC that I tore apart, so it' drivers are on there. I can't run the installer in the laptop with the HDD plugged in because it says that windows 7 "isn't suitable for USB HDDs" and won't install.

So I'm basically stuck in that way.

Yeah that's what I figured. It's Windows way of stopping computer manufacturers from stealing their customer's OS which is why computers are required to have the key labeled on them when you sell them. At least from what I know

Windows isn't liking that laptop's hardware because it's detecting it as a new hardware so it's doing its little thing to prevent you from "pirating it". Only way to fix is re-installing Windows to my knowledge.

The external hdd would have to run through usb which is a ton slower than seta so it probally wouldn't work well if you got it to work

Easily possible..Just wouldn't recommend it...
Hmm let me find that guide.
