I keep it off, but that turns off the turn-resistance also. It kind of feels weird driving with super loose steering :o
That super-loose steering is the closest you will ever get to power steering based from a real steering wheel. That extra stuff they add in is bullstuff; if you want a real life car to feel like the gaming wheel, try making it front wheel drive. With no power steering, and a 20 pound weight on one of the spokes of the wheels on both sides. Oh and, the tires are made of chunky iron, and the front wheels are being yanked by bungee cords every time you make a turn.
Trust me, I've been through the terror of trying to make a USB wheel pin-point realistic.
I can't drive that car worth stuff :C
It takes a stuff ton of practice. I used to do Formula 1 all the time on rFactor, and occasional Test Drive Unlimited with Tom.
