Author Topic: I got GTA4 and GFWL keeps crashing it  (Read 1351 times)

I know this is a problem a lot of people are having, but I tried everything I could find on the internet and It wouldn't stop.
Before I go any further, not Warez'd. Bought from Steam.

The game opens fine, waits a few seconds, goes into the second intro screen (just the words) then I see the gfwl pane start to appear, and then the game crashes.
I've looked it up, installed the newest GFWL, reinstalled .NET 3.5, installed Windows Live Essentials, and nothing worked. So instead of searching even deeper, I'm asking you guys, because hopefully some of you have had this problem and fixed it.

I had problems like this mainly because I haven't updated my drives for years.
I suggest you wait for a more experienced member though.

Can you even run it?
This computer has an i7 920 at 3.4GHz with a GTX 480 and a GTS 250 for PhysX. So yes.

The game opens and plays correctly one out of about seven times I try. And there's no pattern for it opening, except that it seems to work only when the GFWL pane starts to open a second after the second copyright slide comes up. Otherwise it opens during the first one or really late. I reinstalled GFWL again, and it worked the first time I opened it after that, but then it stopped working again.

since it sometimes works could it be something you open up and don't close down properly?

I don't think so, because this is just me opening and closing it trying to get it to work.

After I update my drivers (which is probably not going to work) I think I'll try reinstalling. At this point, it's the only thing I could try that isn't reinstalling Windows which I've already done twice on this computer.

Well, everybody. I thought I had it fixed, but now it doesn't even get to the copyright screens. I thought I would have to reinstall the game, but then I opened minecraft, and now it's crashing randomly. And Arkham Asylum won't even open! I know GTA4 and AA are GFWL games, but Minecraft shouldn't be acting like this too. I guess I'll try a game that doesn't have Games For Windows Live from my Steam library.

faulty harddrive maybe, I dunno.

Any other games you can try?

Run a virus scan.

I would suggest that people who actually know what there talking about post...

I had the same problem but I fixed it.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\grand theft auto iv

open the GTAIV folder

Right-click on the "LaunchGTAIV" application

Go to properties

Go to Compatibility and check the box that says "run this program as an administrator"

Make a shortcut to "LaunchGTAIV"

put shortcut on desktop

If that last thing didn't work uninstall gfwl (I'm assuming that you know how to do this) and open the installers tab in the GTAIV folder. Install that GFWL and the vcred thing.
