Garry's Mod being stupid.

I recently visited a Gmod server which didn't let you start with weapons, and the only way to obtain one (I think) was to ignite an NPC with a weapon and pick it up. Now, when I play Gmod Singleplayer, I start with no weapons; just like in the server. What's going on here?

if p doesn't work, open the console with ~ (enable it via options menu), and type "impulse 101" minus quotes.

Another thing is that I found an addon that added the weapons to my spawn menu so I could spawn them whenever I wanted. That might help.

You just type in sbox_weapons 1 in the console.
It's SOMETHING like that anyway.
