Author Topic: Suggest me a medium end video card.  (Read 601 times)

My current desktop's video card is half broken. It can't play games.
I want a video card that can run:
Blockland at medium-max Graphics.
Terraria. (No seriously, i can't run this with this piece of stuff called a video card)
Everquest 2 at Minimum-Low.
World of warcraft at low-medium.

My current video card gaming specs:

you don't have a video card.

you don't have a video card.
Nope. The computer can't detect the video card now that its broke itself again.
It was supposed to be an nvidia geforce 9450.

I reccomend the 9800GT.

Here

You can grab it for around 50 bucks, except I have one with a higher clock speed and more video ram, it was like 100 dollars.

Link to 9800GT

Can run all of those games you suggested on max at 70+FPS, on BL I get an average of 200 something. 300 on a blank map.

I'm so confused. Why the hell is that STILL such a highly reccomended card? It blows my mind how people use a card 3 years old for highend gaming now.

It's a good card for that price.

It beats all other medium-end cards by a longshot.

How's it rank up next to an ATi Radeon 5800?

I have a 9800GT, its a high end video card by the way guys and my dads desktop has it.
My desktop is reduced to the built in video chip.
Any other video cards? At least a card that will last till November.
Preferably the highest budget to be 60$
I would also prefer if it was sold in stores.

9800GT did me well for a good four years, and that's with NO dust cleaning or anything during that time. I used SLI though, and they were custom by Dell I think.

I'm leaning towards the 9800GT again. The problem is i don't think my power source can support it.

I'm getting a video card in november. I need one now so i can bring my desktop back to the upgrading stage once i start getting money.

I would not buy a 9800GT, it's just not as good as other cards at that price. It's also over kill for what you want to do, with those requirements you could probably buy a 30-40 dollar card and be fine.

What slots do you have available on your motherboard and how many watts is your power supply? What store would you prefer to pick it up at (you've really go a choice between Best Buy and Fry's here, maybe Radioshack for some really cheap cards)? What sort of output do you want (VGA, DVI, or HDMI)? We can probably find you one at best buy that meets your requirements and parts at best buy are really not much more than ordering them online. Best buy makes their money by selling geek squad warranties, overpriced phone accessories, and $100 hdmi cables, their parts are not that expensive and I actually picked up a case at best buy for less than what newegg was selling the case for. It was an antec 300 and I think it was on sale for like 49.99 or something.

spend 100 dollars on a gtx 260, runs everything and its decently cheap

Or you could spend 40 on something like this which will run the games you want until you get the new one you wanted in november.

This card does DVI, HDMI, and VGA out which is great if you want to update your monitor sometime, it will basically work with any monitor you throw at it. It's a bit cheaper, and it uses PCIe x16, which any more recent motherboard should have. If you need a PCI or AGP card you should probably let us know. Otherwise I'd really go with this card. Games people mentioned running on it included World of Warcraft, Halo, Half Life 2, Quake 3, Far Cry, etc. If this works for you then great. Read the reviews before you buy it and make sure it will run the stuff you want.

Wedge.
I can do best buy, and i need a VGA for my monitor. Dual monitor support would be great, but not required.
I also have no idea how to tell which kind of video card i need. I'm gonna do some research on my PC. (Pci, agp, pcie, etc.)
If i could use that card and get my dad to buy it. The broken video card i have supported DVI and VGA. I'm also gonna check my power supply in a minute here. My computer will most likely support PCIe x16 since it is from 2008.
Most of the stuff i want is low-medium end here. I found a 60$ processor i might save up money for after i get a video card.
Edit: I believe the power is 12V And it supports PCIe. I might get that video card if not in the store if i could.
