Author Topic: No need to portforward a hardwired computer?  (Read 3410 times)

So is there a need to portforward a server that is directly plugged into a modem.

looks like someone read bisjac's post

yes... port forwarding has nothing do with wifi

hardwired into a router you still gotta port forward.
hardwired into a modem no.

but dont make the mistake. im referring to like, the cable internet people who dont have wireless modem/router combo devices.

a modem-only modem cannot have wifi. and also has no firewall to forward through.

You actually CAN'T portforward if you're plugged directly into the modem. There is no settings page for modems, because all they do is input/output network data to the ISP.

You might have one of those combo devices as Bisjac said, that is a combined modem/router. If you have more than one ethernet port on the back of your modem, or any wireless signal, then it's a combo box.

yeah most providers now give you a modem/router combination device.

the need to port forward isnt because of wifi though. its when the house IP has to be managed to separate devices at once. you need that firewall software to manage it (and secure it) thus, the port forwarding then exists. and exists inside that router they gave you.

Right. Port forwarding is only required so the router knows which device to send the information to. The modem just pumps all the information to whatever it's connected to, which is either a computer or a router, or the other part of it's own circuit board (in a combo box)
